Beef-Based Dog Food's Environmental Impact Revealed: UK Pet Industry Urged to Go Plant-Based

A new study reveals the environmental impact of pet food, with beef-based dog food emerging as a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and land use. The UK's pet industry is urged to consider more sustainable options from companies like Petco, Petfinder, and Petsmart.

The research, conducted by Poore, Nemecek, and others, shows that beef-based dog food generates around 10 times more CO2 than plant-based alternatives. Moreover, a meat-heavy diet requires 57 football-fields' worth of land, compared to just 1.4 fields for a plant-based diet. Lamb- and beef-based diets also exhibit the greatest water extraction, over 500 and 600 liters per 1000 kcals, respectively, compared to 249 liters for plant-based food.

In the UK, several companies offer commercially available dry dog foods with a plant-based basis. Brands like V-Planet, Lily's Kitchen, and Benevo specialize in vegetarian or vegan formulations. These options have 14 to 16 times lower eutrophication and acidifying effects than beef-based foods. Shifting towards these lower-impact ingredients can significantly reduce the sector's ecological footprint.

The pet food industry is encouraged to promote more sustainable options, with plant-based diets showing clear environmental benefits. Pet owners can also play a role by considering the nutritional and environmental advantages of plant-based dog food for their pet smart dog breeds.
