In July 2025, the global electric vehicle (EV) market witnessed a significant surge, with all-electric car sales growing by 34.7% year-on-year to 1,090,120 units. Chinese automakers dominated the top 10, with BYD leading the pack in the stock market today.
BYD's Strong Performance
BYD, a Chinese automaker, secured seven spots in the top 10 best-selling plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) between January and July. The BYD Song Plus took first place among PHEVs with a 5.3% share and 216,351 deliveries. The BYD Seal 6 came fourth with a 3.1% share and 128,352 deliveries, while the BYD Song Pro was second with a 3.5% share and 143,184 sales. The BYD Destroyer 05 came seventh with a 2.2% share and 90,553 deliveries, and the BYD Yuan Up came next with a 1.7% hold and 121,136 sales. The BYD Yuan Plus was seventh in global BEV sales with 145,382 deliveries and a 2% share. The BYD Seagull, also known as the Dolphin Surf in select markets, finished fourth with 29,166 sales and a 2.7% market share.
Other Notable Performances
The Geely Geome Xingyuan, a compact electric vehicle from Chinese automaker Geely, designed to offer affordable and efficient urban mobility, saw its share climb since sales were first recorded in September 2024. In July 2025, it represented 4.1% of all BEV volumes, placing it in second globally with 44,286 deliveries, 12,688 units ahead of third place. The Aito M9 hit a 1.6% market share with 67,298 deliveries in 10th place.
The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling BEV globally in July 2025, with 82,560 deliveries, although its market share dropped for the 17th consecutive month. The Li Auto L6 was the first non-BYD model to make the top 10 between January and July, taking a 2.7% market share with 111,324 deliveries. The Wuling Bingo was 10th in global BEV sales with 107,097 deliveries and a 1.5% share. The Wuling Mini saw a 70.1% volume increase in July 2025, reaching 26,816 units and a 2.5% market share.
PHEV Sales and Market Shares
PHEV sales grew at a slower rate of 13.5%, with a global volume improvement of 30% year on year across the first seven months of 2025. The BYD Qin Plus was third with a 3.3% share and 135,730 deliveries, while the BYD Dolphin was fourth in the brand's BEV lineup in the top 10, capturing 1.6% of the market with 116,665 sales. The BYD Song L claimed ninth in PHEV sales, increasing by 18.5% to 12,049 units and taking a 1.9% market share, up 0.1pp. The Galaxy Starship 7 came eighth with 1.9% and 79,857 deliveries. The Aito M8 finished third in PHEV sales with 21,564 units and a 3.4% hold on the market. The Buick GL8 enjoyed a 210.8% hike in PHEV sales to 12,437 in July, claiming 2% of the global PHEV market, up 1.2pp.
Declines in Sales and Market Shares
The Tesla Model 3 saw deliveries drop by 7.1% year on year to 31,598 units in July 2025, and its market share fell by 1.3 percentage points compared with 12 months ago. The Li Auto L6 recorded a 40% drop in PHEV deliveries, as its market share decreased by 2.1pp to 2.4%. The BYD Qin Plus saw a 29.3% year-on-year decline in PHEV sales, its market share falling accordingly to 3.3% from 5.3% a year earlier. The BYD Destroyer 5, also known as the Seal 5, recorded a less severe drop of 9.4% to 17,837 sales, equating to a 0.7pp fall in market share to 2.8%. The BYD Qin L, sibling to the Geely Geome Xingyuan, saw its volume slide by 63% to 12,000 units, seeing its market share drop by 3.9pp to 1.9%.
In conclusion, July 2025 saw a strong performance from Chinese automakers in the global electric vehicle market, with BYD leading the way in the stock market today. However, there were also declines in sales and market shares for some models, indicating a more competitive and dynamic market.
