AV's Role in Sustainability Overlooked, Survey Finds

A recent survey reveals a significant gap in understanding how physical spaces can be optimised using smart audio-visual (AV) systems, with 45% of respondents lacking sufficient insight. Meanwhile, 63% of enterprises report their AV departments are contributing to environmental goals, indicating a growing awareness of AV's role in sustainability.

Kinly, a leading AV solutions provider, warns businesses may be overlooking the environmental benefits of AV technology in their sustainability strategies. Despite AV's potential in minimising travel, energy use, and improving resource efficiency, 41% of organisations do not consider AV as a valuable tool for reducing carbon emissions.

However, there's a positive trend in organisations factoring e-waste into their technology procurement decisions, with 61% now considering it. Moreover, 72% expect their AV teams to have defined sustainability targets by the end of the year. Specific companies using AV technology to support environmental goals by 2025 were not detailed, but Genelec, for instance, will showcase their sustainable AV solutions at the Audiovisual Expo 2025 in Tampere, Finland.

Sixty-four percent of businesses believe AV choices can reduce energy use among remote workers, and 31% are investing in smart building analytics to automate lighting and climate control based on occupancy data.

While many organisations are recognising the potential of AV in sustainability, there's still a notable lack of understanding in optimising physical spaces. Businesses are encouraged to leverage AV technology more effectively to achieve their sustainability goals, with e-waste management and defined targets for AV teams becoming increasingly important.
