Australia's Renewable Energy Sector Booms in September 2025

September 2025 saw a significant boost in Australia's renewable energy sector, with a 55% increase in small-scale battery energy storage systems registered, totalling 639 MWh. This growth was driven by federal rebates and increased interest from small businesses, particularly in the 30-50 kWh battery market.

The 75-100 kW segment led the growth in solar installations, while the national average solar system size rose to 10.4 kW. Notably, there was a 'step-change' in volumes for sub-3 kW, 8-10 kW, and 15-20 kW PV installations, likely due to increased battery installations. Despite this growth, the year-to-date installation volume for 2025 is lower than the previous year, marking a break from the recent growth trend.

In terms of capacity, 237 MW of new rooftop PV was installed across Australia in September 2025, a 16.6% increase from the previous month. However, this figure is 10% below September 2024 levels. The average size of batteries being rolled out also increased to 24.40 kWh. All states reported positive growth in battery installations, demonstrating a widespread uptake of energy storage solutions.

September 2025 marked a significant month for Australia's renewable energy sector, with notable increases in both solar installations and battery energy storage systems. While the year-to-date volume is lower than the previous year, the growth in September suggests a positive trajectory for the sector. As the average size of batteries continues to increase and all states report growth, the future of Australia's energy storage landscape appears promising.
