BYD Atto 2 to Enter Australian Market, Challenging Kia EV3 in Affordable Electric SUV Segment
The electric vehicle (EV) market in Australia is set to heat up with the upcoming launch of the BYD Atto 2, a small SUV expected to be priced around $35,000 before on-road costs and options. This new arrival is poised to compete directly with the Kia EV3, as both vehicles target the budget-friendly EV segment increasingly popular in Australia.
The BYD Atto 2 is the latest addition to BYD’s growing lineup of competitive electric vehicles, following the success of the Atto 3. Positioned as an affordable model with modern EV technology, the Atto 2 is expected to further strengthen BYD’s presence in the Australian market.
On the other hand, the Kia EV3 is a compact electric SUV that emphasises urban utility and affordability. It forms part of Kia's strategy to eventually replace the locally known Niro EV with the EV3 and an upcoming hybrid small SUV. Both the Atto 2 and the EV3 cater to Australian buyers looking for a reliable small electric SUV, offering practicality and value.

The Atto 2 will be available in two model grades - Essential and Premium - and will be the cheapest SUV for the Chinese brand BYD. The Australian-spec BYD Atto 2 models will use a 51.13kWh 'Blade' lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The overseas markets version of the Atto 2 supports 65kW DC fast charging, taking the battery from 30 to 80 per cent charge in 28 minutes.
The Atto 2 was designed by former Alfa Romeo, Audi, and Lamborghini designer Wolfgang Egger, ensuring a sleek and stylish exterior. The exterior features LED headlights, a full-width light bar, 'Chinese knot' tail-lights, rounded edges, sharp angles, sporty alloy wheels, a distinctive floating roofline treatment, a high-mounted rear spoiler, and short front and rear overhangs.
The Atto 2 is expected to be competitive with popular and affordable EVs in the small SUV class. With its launch in the final quarter of 2025, the Atto 2 is set to shake up the Australian electric small SUV market. The 2026 BYD Sealion 8, a plug-in hybrid family SUV, will follow the Atto 2 in early 2026, further expanding BYD’s SUV range to five models.
