Australia Boosts Military Power with $705M HIMARS Purchase
Australia is set to bolster its military capabilities with a significant investment in High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS). The Australian government has approved the purchase of up to 48 HIMARS launchers, resupply vehicles, trailers, and practice rockets from the United States. This deal, valued at up to $705 million, is expected to transform the Australian Army's land-based maritime strike capabilities.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has confirmed this potential sale, which includes M142 HIMARS launchers and associated equipment. Australia has already ordered 42 HIMARS launchers, with delivery scheduled by 2027. The recent approval paves the way for an additional 48 systems, further strengthening Australia's artillery capabilities.
Defense Minister Richard Marles has praised the HIMARS system, describing it as a 'game-changer' for the Australian Army. The HIMARS launchers, along with the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), are being considered to meet the requirements of Project Land 8113 Phase 2. This project aims to provide Australia with a land-based maritime strike capability.
Australia has invested in the co-development of PrSM Increment 2, which will feature a dual-mode seeker. This upgrade will enable the missile to strike moving targets up to 310 miles away, significantly enhancing Australia's strike capabilities. The Australian Army is eager to acquire this advanced technology to complement its existing forces.
The potential HIMARS deal, worth up to $705 million, is a significant step towards enhancing Australia's military capabilities. With the approval of up to 48 additional HIMARS launchers, Australia is set to bolster its land-based maritime strike capabilities. The integration of the HIMARS system with the advanced Precision Strike Missile promises to provide the Australian Army with a formidable force, ready to meet the challenges of the modern battlefield.
