Audemars Piguet Unveils RD#5: A Chronograph Game-Changer
Audemars Piguet has unveiled the Royal Oak 'Jumbo' Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph RD#5, a timepiece that marks a significant departure from the brand's usual approach. This innovative creation is part of the RD series, launched in 2015, which focuses on pushing the boundaries of ultra-thin watchmaking and advanced horological complications.
The RD series, under the guidance of Lucas Raggi, director of R&D at Audemars Piguet, has tackled various challenges since its inception. Previous projects include enhancing the sound of a minute-repeater (RD#1), reducing the thickness of a perpetual calendar (RD#2), and a tourbillon (RD#3), culminating in the most complicated watch AP had produced (RD#4).
For RD#5, the team aimed to recreate the softer pusher sensation found in vintage movies for the chronograph function. This presented a significant challenge as the operation of the chronograph has remained largely unchanged for 200 years. The team sought to overhaul this mechanism while maintaining the watch's extra-thin profile.
The Royal Oak 'Jumbo' Extra-Thin Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon Chronograph RD#5 is a testament to Audemars Piguet's commitment to innovation and pushing the boundaries of watchmaking. This latest addition to the RD series not only sets a new standard for chronograph operation but also pays homage to the brand's rich history and the charm of vintage watches.
