At their Connect event, Meta introduces AI-enhanced smart glasses including a screen and neural wristband.
In a significant stride towards human-computer interactions, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has announced the next step in this evolution: smart glasses. The glasses, set to revolutionise the way we communicate and interact with technology, are controlled by a neural wristband with barely perceptible movements.
Meta has updated its original, display-less meta stock, improving their battery life to last eight hours with typical use. The new model of the meta stock, now priced at $379, has seen more popularity than expected, according to the company. The previous model, now costing $299, remains a popular choice.
Forrester analyst Thomas Husson has stated that the momentum to move beyond an early adopter niche for these glasses is now present. This sentiment is echoed by the success of Meta's AI-powered smart glasses, including the Meta Ray-Ban Display and the new Oakley Meta Vanguard.
The Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses will be available on September 30 and cost $799. On the other hand, the Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses, specifically designed for high-intensity sports and compatible with Garmin devices, will go on sale on October 21 for $499.
In his July post, Zuckerberg detailed his views on 'personal superintelligence,' believing it will 'help humanity accelerate our pace of progress.' However, he did not disclose how this superintelligence will be achieved or exactly what it means.
Meta has made massive investments in AI development and hired top talent at high compensation levels. The company engaged Yann LeCun, a Turing Award-winning AI scientist, to lead its AI unit and recruited other top researchers for AI development. In 2025, Meta founded Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) to develop superintelligence, investing $100 billion by 2026 and actively recruiting top talents for the project.
Zuckerberg believes AI glasses will be 'the main way we integrate superintelligence.' One of the upcoming features for the updated meta stock is called 'conversation focus,' which amplifies the voice of the person the user is speaking to and helps drown out background noise.
However, no further details were provided about the Orion prototype or its release date. Meta teased a prototype for Orion, which Zuckerberg called 'the most advanced glasses the world has ever seen,' last year, but these holographic augmented reality glasses are still years away from being on the market.
As the world of technology continues to evolve, Meta's latest smart glasses are a testament to the company's commitment to pushing the boundaries of innovation and integrating AI into our daily lives.
