AT&T Agrees to a $177 Million Settlement - Check if You're Entitled to Compensation
In 2024, two data breaches occurred at AT&T, affecting millions of their customers. Here's what you need to know about the settlement and how to claim compensation if you were affected.
The first data breach occurred on March 30, 2024, and affected approximately 7.6 million current and 65.4 million former account holders. Personal information such as names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, account passcodes, billing account numbers, and Social Security numbers were exposed.
A second data breach occurred on July 12, 2024, and involved the illegal downloading of data from a third-party cloud platform hosted by Snowflake. The telephone numbers of current and former customers, as well as the numbers of people they contacted, call counts, and durations, were affected.
AT&T has agreed to pay a total of $177 million to resolve claims stemming from both breaches. The settlement fund is designed to provide compensation to those affected, with payments depending on the extent of the data breach's impact.
If you were affected by the first data breach, you may be eligible for certain payments. A documented loss cash payment of up to $5,000 is available for those affected, requiring receipts to prove loss traceability to the data breach. Additionally, a tiered cash payment (Tier 1 payments, for Social Security number exposure, are larger than Tier 2) is also available.
For the second data breach, you can get up to $2,500 for documented losses or a tier 3 cash payment, with amounts depending on the number of claims.
If you were affected by both data breaches, you may claim amounts for each separately, potentially totaling up to $7,500. However, you cannot use the same receipts to prove both losses.
To receive a payout from the settlement, you must file a claim by November 18, 2025, and submit it on the settlement website or by mail. Mailed claims must be postmarked by November 18, 2025. If you're planning to file a lawsuit against AT&T, it is best to consult with your lawyer before enrolling in the settlement, as doing so will prevent you from filing a separate lawsuit. Your request to opt out must be mailed and postmarked by October 17, 2025.
You may have already received an email or postcard from AT&T containing your class member ID number, which is needed to file a claim. Make sure to keep records and receipts if you intend to claim documented losses, as supporting documentation will be required to substantiate higher payments.
If unsure if you were affected or haven't received your class member ID number, you can contact the settlement website or call 833-890-4930 for more information. The final court approval hearing is scheduled for December 3, 2025, and payments will be processed after appeals and deadlines expire, so be patient after filing your claim.
The finance sector, along with the business and technology industries, were impacted by the two data breaches at AT&T in 2024. The settlement fund, amounting to $177 million, has been established to compensate those affected, with payments dependent on the extent of the data breach's impact in both instances.
