Artificial Intelligence Researcher Receives Initial Archimedes Science Award

In the heart of Germany, Dresden will once again become a hub for scientific innovation as the annual "Building Bridges Conference" approaches. This year, the conference, titled "Latest Findings in Artificial Intelligence," will take place on September 11–12, 2025, and will be under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Czech President Petr Pavel.

The highlight of the conference will be the formal award ceremony of the Archimedes Science Award, a unique Saxon prize for scientific excellence. The award, which stands for successful cooperation across borders, recognizes scientific achievements with significant impact on solving global challenges. This year, the award will be presented to Dr. Cordelia Schmid, an internationally renowned computer scientist and AI researcher.

Dr. Schmid, a research director at the Institut de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique (Inria) and also working at Google DeepMind, has made groundbreaking contributions to the field of computer vision, machine learning, and robotics. Her research has revolutionized the automated recognition of complex objects in images and videos, with applications in search engines and multimodal AI systems.

The Archimedes Science Award honors Dr. Schmid's significant role in shaping her field of research and her contributions to real-time recognition of complex objects in images and videos. TU Dresden, with the ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig center, is one of the leading locations for data-intensive science and AI. Dr. Schmid's research focus on human-machine interaction fits perfectly with the strengths of TUD, which is at the forefront of research within the CeTI excellence cluster.

TUD Rector Prof. Ursula Staudinger will deliver the laudation for Dr. Cordelia Schmid during the formal award ceremony, which will take place at the Festspielhaus Hellerau as part of the Building Bridges Conference 2025. The award is presented by Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer, who emphasizes the importance of research and innovations for ensuring prosperity.

In addition to the award ceremony, Dr. Cordelia Schmid will give a keynote speech on "Artificial Intelligence: Past, Present and Future." She has also played a crucial role in shaping the scientific community through leading positions in renowned journals and conferences and has mentored numerous young scientists.

The conference, organized by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), brings together top international research with politics and business annually. This year, the conference gives special attention to the Baltic region. The Archimedes Science Award focuses on current developments in artificial intelligence in the fields of microelectronics, medicine, and energy.

The Archimedes Science Award is a testament to the importance of scientific advancements and the impact they can have on global challenges. As we look forward to the conference in 2025, we celebrate Dr. Cordelia Schmid's achievements and the strides being made in the field of artificial intelligence.
