University of Applied Sciences Ruhr West Expands Startup Support

The University of Applied Sciences Ruhr West (HRW) is embarking on an ambitious expansion of its startup support, with the creation of the HRWStartUp.Center. Funded under the "Start-up Center.NRW" program by the Ministry of Economy, Industry, Climate Protection, and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia, this project aims for a long-term transformation toward becoming an Entrepreneurial University.

The strategy focuses on a university-wide enhancement of startup promotion and embedding an "Entrepreneurial Mindset" across teaching, research, and transfer activities. Key elements of the strategy include establishing an institutional framework, organizational strengthening, curricular development, and community-building measures.

The HRWStartUp.Center will serve as a core innovation and entrepreneurship unit, systematically identifying and nurturing startup ideas, especially those emerging from research. To ensure lasting impact, startup support will be anchored structurally within the university’s operations.

Curricular development will see the integration of entrepreneurship education, with new elective modules and a planned "Entrepreneurship Edition" study track. This will enable students to gain entrepreneurial skills during their studies. The project aims for a long-term transformation toward becoming an Entrepreneurial University, with the HRWStartUp.Center operational from September 2025.

The broader goals of the Start-up Center.NRW initiative align with HRW's strategy. It emphasizes raising awareness among students and researchers about entrepreneurial thinking, identifying and activating startup potentials in research, providing tailored qualification and support for founders, and networking with various stakeholders.

The initiative also aims to develop technical infrastructures like startup centers, maker spaces, and FabLabs, and expand startup alumni networks to sustain the ecosystem. Overall, HRW's strategy combines organizational, educational, and community-building measures to create a sustainable, innovation-driven startup environment within the university framework.
