Apple unveils forthcoming enhancement for AirPods Max: Lossless audio support

Apple will be introducing lossless audio support for the AirPods Max in the near future.

In 2024 and early 2025, Apple introduced a significant update to the AirPods Max, introducing a USB-C port and a firmware update that enables wired audio playback with lossless sound at 24-bit/48kHz resolution. This update allows the AirPods Max to play Apple Music’s Lossless tier audio, improving sound quality beyond Bluetooth AAC codec limits.

With the new USB-C port, the AirPods Max can now connect directly to compatible devices like iPhones, iPads, or MacBooks, bypassing Bluetooth’s audio compression. The USB-C charging port replaces the older Lightning port, consolidating charging and wired audio capabilities into a modern standard.

One of the key benefits of this update is the ultra-low latency audio in wired mode, which is beneficial for audiophiles and users requiring precise synchronization, such as gamers. Since the headphones rely on active electronics, they require battery power to operate even in wired mode; they cannot function passively if the battery is dead.

The AirPods Max are known for their eclectic audio quality for music and intimate audio quality for taking calls. They consistently outperform most monitors at the same or greater price point. The headphones' custom 40mm dynamic drivers are soon expected to leverage this new capability for a lossless audio profile.

A USB-C to 3.5mm auxiliary jack cable can be purchased separately for $39 from the Apple store, allowing users to connect the AirPods Max to devices without USB-C ports. The AirPods Max are priced at $549, the same price as before.

The update also includes Personalized Spatial Audio technology for a personalized lossless audio experience. Wireless headphones generally have inferior audio quality compared to wired headphones, but the AirPods Max have managed to provide a high-quality listening experience.

In future models, such as the AirPods Max 2 planned for 2027, full Hi-Res Lossless support and adaptive audio features are expected to be introduced. The AirPods Max also offer noise cancellation and have a battery life of 20 hours with ANC. A cable option in wireless headphones can improve audio quality by providing a more direct signal path.

The Personalized Spatial Audio technology in the updated AirPods Max offers a personalized lossless audio experience, making it an attractive choice for audiophiles who prefer wired connections to minimize audio compression. With the introduction of the USB-C port and the lossless audio profile supported by the custom 40mm dynamic drivers, these smartphones and gadgets accessories like the AirPods Max are set to elevate their style by adopting more sophisticated vices, catering to tastes that demand premium sound quality.
