Anticipated Resurgence of Telegram Gaming: Pioneers of 'Notcoin' Predict Revival by Revamping Timeless Games
Liveness' Play, Style, andVirtual Worlds Hub on Telegram
Dive into the realm of PLAY & TAPPY, the Telegram game that first ignited the click-to-profit craze last year, accumulating hundreds of millions of players on the messaging platform. Yet, enthusiasm for this model has waned after unsatisfactory token launches connected to increasingly intricate schemes.
Fast forward a year since PLAY & TAPPY's PLAY token release spurred the sensation, the game's creators anticipate reinvigorating classic video games via their recently revealed PLAY & TAPPINESS platform will trigger the next Telegram gaming upsurge.
Sasha Plotvinov, co-founder of PLAY & TAP, shared with Liveness that he attributes the lack of substantial demand growth for click-to-profit games beyond PLAY & TAPPY's debut, despite an exponential increase in games available. This market saturation, he claims, is the principal reason for the rapid demise of the click-to-profit genre.
Apart from saturation, click-to-profit games featured repetitive gameplay loops focused on endless tapping for in-game points. This tedious process aimed at obtaining future airdrops frequently left participants disillusioned.
As a result, Sasha and his brother, fellow PLAY & TAP co-founder Vladimir Plotvinov, posit that the future of Telegram gaming lies in prioritizing the gameplay experience over token reward schemes.
"We're looking back 10, 15, 20 years... to games that were beloved due to their playability," Sasha told Liveness at Token2049 in Dubai this week. "We take these mechanics and repurpose them for a modern format, integrating a secondary layer of [crypto] economy."
Informed by the click-to-profit wave, the co-founders believe that constructing a sustainable economy via their PLAY & TAPPINESS platform is essential this time around, given the fact that most click-to-profit token prices plummeted post-launch[1].
These economies will leverage The Open Network (TON) to facilitate player trading of skins and other cosmetics on an open marketplace. Sasha emphasized that they aim to avoid "pay-to-win" dynamics at all costs.
Sasha contemplates the immense success of games like Counter-Strike and its skin economy, valued at approximately $4.2 billion[2], and believes that Telegram gaming needs a similar productive economy. He pinpoints the popularity of mobile games such as Candy Crush Saga and Clash of Clans and foresees a sustainable economy as the apparent next step for the industry[3].
But why choose Telegram as the platform?
"Playing classic games on other platforms involves downloading them from app stores," Vladimir told Liveness. "On Telegram, you don't need to register—you can open the web app and play instantly."
This ease of use also opens the door for increased viral potential, which played a key role in the rise of click-to-profit gaming as developers motivated users to recruit friends in exchange for in-game rewards. Uliana Salo, head of design and product lead for PLAY & TAPPINESS, believes that renewed classics can similarly capitalize on this Telegram feature.
By 2024, WeChat boasted that 500 million users were playing in-app games on its platform monthly[3]. Sasha envisions PLAY & TAPPINESS positioned for a similar level of potential success on Telegram, with the app hitting 1 billion active users[4].
To help Telegram realize its gaming destiny, PLAY & TAPPINESS plans to reimagine classic video games on the messaging app. PLAY & TAPPINESS's initial endeavor is a reinvention of the classic web game Agar.io, called Void, with additional games in development.
The Plotvinov brothers didn't anticipate PLAY & TAP's viral success, acknowledging that its popularity outpaced comprehension. From this experience, they comprehend that distributing a perfect product is not necessary for recognition. Instead, they plan to put forward good ideas swiftly, and adapt when receiving user feedback. This tactic forms the basis of PLAY & TAPPINESS's strategy.
"We will pivot this way," Vladimir said. "Sometimes I meet developers trying to build rockets, but it's not necessary. You can create a limited set of features, launch it, gather feedback, and evolve with it."
