Annual Digital Gathering Involving Leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union Governments
Digital 2021 Forum Kicks Off in Almaty, Kazakhstan
The Digital 2021 Forum, a significant event focusing on the digital strategy of EAEU member countries by 2025, is currently underway in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The event, marking the first foreign visit of the year for many and the first since the start of the pandemic for some, is attracting heads of governments of the EAEU countries in person, as well as hosting some events online.
In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Askar Mamin highlighted the extensive effort made in Kazakhstan to ensure digital connectivity. Thousands of installations for million-level connectivity have been deployed, enabling over 15 million people in the country to access wireless internet. Remarkably, 99% of Kazakhstan's residents now have access to the internet.
The Prime Minister also emphasised the deep penetration of digital technologies as a main mechanism for the private sector to adapt to doing business under social restrictions. This has been particularly evident in the widespread adoption of remote work and learning formats, which have allowed societal functions to stabilise and prevent a collapse in income and quality of life levels.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, in his speech, underlined the importance of digitalization for the future. However, he did not mention specific figures regarding the number of installations for million-level connectivity or the percentage of Kazakhstan's residents with internet access.
The agenda of the Digital 2021 Forum includes discussions on the future of e-commerce and global digitalization trends in education. The accelerated implementation of digital solutions by state institutions has been a response to the need to provide the population with government services under limited physical presence conditions, as noted by Prime Minister Mamin.
During the crisis, around 6.5 million citizens in Kazakhstan received state support through digital systems. Over 90% of state services in the country are now provided electronically.
Despite the search results not providing specific information about which countries had representatives at the Digital 2021 conference in Almaty, the event is expected to foster collaboration and innovation among EAEU member countries in their digital marketing strategies.
