Amazon's Automated Packaging Machines in Europe Reduce Waste and Boost Sustainability

Amazon is making significant strides in its quest for sustainability, as it invests in automated packaging solutions across Europe. According to Rowan Stott, an expert in retail automation at Interact Analysis, this move is seen as a strategic offensive and a response to the growing strength of e-commerce.

The automation spending by Amazon peaked in 2021, while the rest of the US industry's automation investments didn't peak until 2024. The timing and geographical scope of Amazon's introduction of automated packaging solutions suggest that the EU Packaging Directive (PPWR) may be a significant factor.

Amazon's recent announcement to deploy hundreds of Right-Fit cartonizing machines across Europe is viewed as the most significant move by a single customer in this area. These machines create right-sized boxes and paper bags on demand, significantly cutting the amount of excess packaging material used. Each automated paper bag saves approximately 26 grams of material and is 90% lighter than a comparable corrugated box.

This downsizing of packaging also means that more packages can be loaded per delivery vehicle, leading to fewer shipments and thus reduced carbon emissions. In addition, these machines help Amazon to phase out single-use plastics. In Europe, Amazon delivers 100% curbside recyclable packaging, and 87 fulfillment centers have eliminated plastic delivery packaging. Such efforts have contributed to a global elimination of an estimated 80,000 metric tons of single-use plastic since 2020.

The packaging used is also certified to stringent durability tests (ISTA 6), reducing product damage rates, returns, and waste due to damaged goods.

Amazon's approach is backed by its Operations Innovation Labs, notably in Vercelli, Italy, which focus on testing and deploying robotic and AI-driven sustainable packaging technologies. These labs emphasize improving environmental outcomes while maintaining worker safety and customer satisfaction.
