During a recent visit to Rome, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, marking a significant step forward in the cooperation between the two nations. The agreement, focused on telecommunications and postal services, aims to enhance collaboration in various areas, including 5G, cloud services, and the development of a new subsea cable linking Algeria and Italy.

Key aspects of the MoU include:

  • Subsea Cable Project: Algérie Télécom and Italy's leading international service provider, Sparkle, will jointly develop a new high-capacity submarine cable between the two countries. This cable will provide ultra-low latency connections, enhanced performance, full redundancy, and improved bandwidth and resilience compared to existing infrastructure.
  • Digital Transformation Support: The agreement supports Algeria’s broader digital transformation efforts by providing improved connectivity to Europe and global digital services.
  • Additional Services: Beyond the infrastructure, Sparkle will offer value-added services such as cybersecurity, cloud computing support, technical assistance for data center development, capacity-building including training on key technical topics, and establish a dedicated European point of presence for Algérie Télécom.
  • Postal and Telecommunications Cooperation: The MoU also aims to boost cooperation in postal services and telecom sectors more broadly, strengthening bilateral ties in communications technology.

This partnership is part of Italy’s strategic efforts to enhance connectivity and digital collaboration with North Africa, in line with Italy’s Mattei Plan for Africa, promoting economic cooperation and technological advancement.

In addition to the infrastructure developments, the agreement includes the enhancement of human capital through technical workshops and training programs for experts from both sides. Mr. Sid Ali Zerrouli, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, and Mr. Adolfo URSO, Italian Minister of Enterprises and Industry, signed the MoU, reaffirming the depth and strength of Algerian-Italian relations.

Mr. Zerrouli emphasized the shift from a traditional partnership to a forward-looking alliance between Algeria and Italy, calling for these relations to serve as a pioneering model of digital integration and technological cooperation. The objective of the cooperation is to boost international interconnectivity, expand mobile data services, and develop 5G solutions and IoTs. With this MoU, Algeria and Italy are taking concrete steps towards a connected, secure, and innovative future.
