EVA Air Embraces Sustainable Aviation Fuel in Historic Move

EVA Air, a leading Taiwanese airline, has taken a significant step towards sustainability by partnering with international partners to secure regular and independent SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) supply starting from the second quarter of 2025. This move marks a historic moment for Taiwanese aviation.

Formosa Petrochemical, the first provider of SAF produced in Taiwan, will play a crucial role in this initiative. The successful introduction of locally produced SAF in Taiwan is a significant step towards broader usage of sustainable fuels in the region. Strengthening regional production and supply structures is a key goal for EVA Air.

In addition to Formosa Petrochemical, EVA Air has signed supply agreements with AEG FUELS (USA), COSMO Oil (Japan), and Evergreen Group. The aim of these partnerships is to ensure a steady supply of sustainable kerosene at major international hubs, including North America, Japan, and Taiwan. COSMO Oil will play a crucial role in Japan, particularly leading up to the Osaka Expo 2025.

The use of SAF by EVA Air is part of its long-term environmental strategy to reduce CO2 emissions. From the second quarter of 2025, the use of SAF at major international airports, including Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and others, will be independent and regular. EVA Air has also been flying all European routes with a two percent SAF blend since the first quarter of 2025, in line with EU's climate regulations.

This move by EVA Air is in line with global sustainability initiatives. The airline aims to join these initiatives in the future. The partnerships with SAF suppliers aim to provide sustainable kerosene at major international hubs, including locations in North America, Japan, and Taiwan. Sustainable Aviation Fuel is considered one of the most effective levers for reducing CO2 emissions in the aviation industry.

The passion for aviation runs deep at EVA Air. Dominik Lelle, a member of the online editorial team at AERO INTERNATIONAL since 2023, shares this passion. Outside of the editorial office, Lelle enjoys traveling and discovering new horizons. His passion for aviation inspires him to make the world of aviation tangible and engaging for readers.

On April 23, 2025, EVA Air used Taiwanese-produced SAF for the first time on two international flights, a historic moment for Taiwanese aviation. This move by EVA Air is a testament to its commitment to sustainability and reducing CO2 emissions. As the airline continues to collaborate with international partners, it is poised to lead the way in sustainable aviation.
