The Indian government is set to release an Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance framework by September 28, with a significant focus on AI safety and safeguarding citizens from AI harm.

The framework, which has been under development for some time, will define clear boundaries for AI safety-related items and outline checks and balances, but will not be "prescriptive". Over 3000 consultations were held to develop the framework, reflecting the government's commitment to collaboration with industry and stakeholders.

India believes in striking a balance of innovation and regulation, and the AI governance framework is a testament to this approach. The minister emphasized that whatever is necessary for the safety of citizens will be converted into law.

The minister also stated that portions of the AI governance framework not yet made into law will continue to be worked on with industry and stakeholders. However, specific details on the measures being taken to curb the misuse of AI-generated content, such as synthetic content and deepfakes, were not provided.

In addition to the AI governance framework, the Indian government is also hosting the AI Impact Summit 2026, to be held in India on February 19-20, 2026. The summit will have a focus on AI safety and citizen protection, aligning with the government's commitment to ensuring the responsible use of AI.

The AI Impact Summit 2026 will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the ministry is working with the Ministry of External Affairs to decide the list of invitees. As of now, there are no available search results specifying who will open the AI Impact Summit 2026.

India will place strong emphasis on AI safety at the AI Impact Summit, reflecting the country's commitment to responsible AI development and deployment. The summit is expected to attract a wide range of participants from the AI industry, academia, and government, making it a significant event in the global AI landscape.

The minister did not provide specific details on the measures being taken to curb the misuse of AI-generated content, but the government's focus on AI safety indicates a proactive approach to addressing this challenge. As AI continues to play an increasingly important role in society, India's AI governance framework and AI Impact Summit 2026 are poised to make significant contributions to ensuring the safe and responsible use of AI.
