African Startup Funding Slows in March 2025, Q1 2025 Hits Record Low

March 2025 saw a significant slowdown in startup funding, marking one of the slowest months since late 2020. This trend continued a declining trend from February, with funding dropping by 58%.

The dominance of smaller deals contributed to this sluggish performance. Energy and logistics & transportation sectors followed fintech in funding share. However, fintech startups still dominated, accounting for 46% of the total funding in Q1 2025. African startups secured only $50 million in March, with Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Egypt taking 83% of the funding during Q1 2025.

Despite the overall decline, Togo secured a spot in the top five funding recipients, largely due to Gozem's $30 million Series B round. However, the year 2025 is setting record lows for February and March funding, with Q1 2025's performance at $460 million dragged down by March's poor showing.

March 2025's funding was a significant drop from previous months, with African startups securing only $50 million. Despite this, Togo managed to secure a spot in the top five funding recipients. However, the overall trend for 2025 is setting record lows for funding in the first two months.
