Adirondacks Unveils Year-Round Rail Trail & Tupper Lake Station

Governor Kathy Hochul has unveiled two significant recreation and transportation projects in the Adirondacks. The 34-mile Adirondack Rail Trail is now open year-round, while the Adirondack Rail Station in Tupper Lake has been completed. Both projects have transformed the region's outdoor access and connectivity.

The trail's construction was funded by the 2022 Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act, totalling $13.1 million. It stretches from Lake Placid to Tupper Lake, passing through Saranac Lake, offering access to diverse natural habitats, campsites, and waterways. The trail is open to hikers, bikers, cross-country skiers, and snowmobile enthusiasts.

The DEC is restoring the Saranac Lake Union Depot to complement the trail, ensuring public use and access. The Adirondack Rail Trail Association assists DEC with trail maintenance and stewardship. Meanwhile, the Adirondack Railroad provides passenger train service to Tupper Lake, with a new accessible train platform and maintenance shed.

Temporary detours or obstructions may occur on the trail through October due to signage placement and equipment access. Up-to-date information on trail conditions and a public use map are available on I Love New York's website. These projects support Governor Hochul's 'Get Offline, Get Outside' campaign and challenge, encouraging outdoor recreation and exploration in the Adirondacks.
