3D Printing Ventures Get a Boost: Bambu Lab Launches Kickstarter-type Funding on MakerWorld Website for Intricate Projects

MakerWorld, a popular platform for 3D printing models, has launched a new crowdfunding program to support designers working on big, ambitious projects. This innovative tool, introduced by Bambu Lab, offers a unique opportunity for creators to connect directly with a knowledgeable community interested in intricate designs.

The projects launched on MakerWorld Crowdfunding cover a wide range of interests, from crazy toys and games to modular lamps, a printable keyboard, a TPU handbag, and even a full-size pinball machine. One of the games launched, Relic Rush, is a cube-shaped mechanical "board game" where players move mini adventurers across obstacles and traps.

Designers submit their 3D printing projects for crowdfunding by emailing an application to [email protected], with the subject line "[Crowdfunding project application]". If approved, they create a campaign on the MakerWorld platform where they set a funding goal between $500 and $50,000 USD and choose a fundraising period from 7 to 60 days, typically 30, 45, or 60 days.

They provide a detailed project proposal, explaining the model's uniqueness, and use of funds, along with high-quality visuals to attract backers. Designers also define pledge levels with tiered rewards such as exclusive STL files, tutorials, DIY kits, or custom 3D prints of their design to incentivize supporters.

Communicating transparently with the community through updates and responses to comments during the campaign helps build trust. If the funding goal is met within the timeline, the project is successfully funded. MakerWorld charges a 10% fee plus payment processing fees, and projects can either remain exclusive to supporters or be released for free later at the designer’s discretion.

MakerWorld Crowdfunding uses an all-or-nothing funding model. This means that if a project fails to reach its goal within the time allowed, it fails, and supporters are only charged when a project is successfully funded. Designers can also choose to scuttle their project early and restart at a later date.

The program was launched on July 30th with 13 designers handpicked by MakerWorld. Interested designers can email [email protected] to learn more about the application process. More information about MakerWorld Crowdfunding can be found on its FAQ page.

In addition to the crowdfunding program, MakerWorld introduced Commercial License Memberships in February, which allow designers to charge makers for the right to sell printed models. This move further supports creators in monetizing their work and fostering a vibrant 3D printing community.

The innovative tool introduced by Bambu Lab, MakerWorld Crowdfunding, offers creators an opportunity to monetize their 3D printing projects, allowing them to pursue ambitious lifestyle and technology-focused designs. Projects on MakerWorld cover various interests, including games like Relic Rush, intricate modular lamps, and even a full-size pinball machine.
